Prevalence of intestinal parasites among schoolboys of Jazan region, southwest Saudi Arabia: 2015

The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of intestinal helminthes infection among schoolboys in Jazan region, Saudi Arabia and to find out associated risk factors and linked health hazards. A cross-sectional survey among random sample of schoolboys in Jazan Region was carried out. It included stool examination, anthropometric measurements as well questionnaire answered by all schoolboys. Among 223 schoolboys examined for intestinal helminthes ova, 17 (7.6%) were positive for intestinal helminthes. The helminthes detected were Hymenolepis nana, Ascaris lumbricoides and Taenia saginata. The findings indicate a significant difference between ova positive and ova negative schoolboys by age and by school. Significant difference in height and weight were observed between ova positive and ova negative schoolboys. There was a clear evidence of occurrence of some intestinal helminthes in Jazan Region, Southwest Saudi Arabia. However, the prevalence of these helminthes was low compared to other parts of the country. On other hand, the findings could not provide conclusive evidence regarding the risk factors considered here.
