Comparative studies on the chemical composition and anti-nutritional contents of the Lagenaria breviflora and Colocynthis citrullus seeds

Abstract

Many research works have been reported on the medicinal uses of the Lagenaria breviflora (Adenopus breviflorus Benth) plant but no documentation about the nutrient content of its seed hence this study was carried out to determine the chemical composition and anti – nutritional content of L. breviflora seed (Itagiri) compared with Colocynthis citrullus seed (melon). The fruits of the two samples were purchased from Lafenwa market in Abeokuta; the seeds were removed from the pods, washed, dried, de-husked and ground with a blender. Chemical analysis was carried out using standard methods. The result showed slight differences in the chemical components of both samples which were not significant (p < 0.05) except the carbohydrate content which was higher in C. citrullus (10.5%). The oxalate and phytate contents were low which shows that the dietary minerals can easily be absorbed, oil obtained from both samples were acidic, L. breviflora seed oil was strongly acidic (pH 3.69) and had higher acid value (8.01 ± 0.10). Low peroxide values observed indicated that both samples had high levels of anti-oxidants. The chemical compositions of both seeds were similar except the acid value content of L. breviflora which makes it not suitable for consumption but may be used for soap making.
